James Edward Hanger was only 18 when he became the first amputee of the Civil War. He then built his own artificial leg and went on to found a company that’s still the largest producer of prosthetics today. His story inspired me to write “The Man Who Built a Better Leg” for the August 2017 issue of Cricket.
